Fortnite Adding and Subtracting Fractions Board Game (Coleman Creations)

★★★☆☆

Players: 2-4 | CCSS Grades: 3 to 5 | For teachers and families

Coleman Creations has leveraged the obsession many children have with Fortnite Opens in a new tab.to create an engaging fractions game. This game reinforces how to add and subtract fractions with like and unlike denominators. It also is a part of a Math Board Games Bundle.

The Fortnite game design is alluring. Children can only make their way to the top of the pyramid by answering questions correctly. They must write their answers on paper so that the other player can check them. This encourages children to check each other’s work and be engaged in peer-to-peer learning. However, teachers may have a challenge monitoring all game sessions since an answer key isn’t provided.

Any player who lands on a “Take a Chance” spot on the game board draws one of these cards which either instructs the player to move forward or back a certain number of spaces.

The game also includes a worksheet that players can use to show their calculations. Problems range in difficulty from adding/subtracting fractions with like denominators to adding/subtracting mixed numbers and fractions with unlike denominators. ★★★★☆

★★★★☆

Players: 2-4 | CCSS Grades: 4 | For teachers

This Adding and Subtracting Fractions Board GameOpens in a new tab. focuses specifically on adding and subtracting fractions with like denominators. Mixed numbers are also included in some of the questions. It also comes with answer keys so children can check their own answers.

Unlike other games with plain game board designs, this fraction board game is colorful and shaped like a snake. Not again” and see children focusing on playing their best game so that they can reach the finish line.

However, a drawback of the game is that it has 21 pages (not optimized pages, each page has only 4 cards for example). This is a lot of printing, especially if you’re using colored ink and printing for multiple groups. Regardless, it’s still a worthwhile addition to a teacher’s math learning center.

Middle School Printable Board Games for Adding & Subtracting Fractions

Captain Peety’s Quest (Learn with Pye)

★★★★★

Players: 2-4 | CCSS Grades: 5-8 | For teachers

One of the advantages of Captain Peety’s QuestOpens in a new tab. is that it teaches multiple fraction skills: adding, subtracting, finding common denominators, reducing fractions and finding equivalent fractions. Therefore, this game can be used at multiple grade levels.

The pirate theme makes the game fun and interesting for children of all ages. The witty game prompts are bound to make players smile (or cry). For instance, one says:

You pick a fight with a whale. Not a very smart move. You lose 6 pieces of 8 in the epic battle…epic meaning it swallowed your ship whole.

The game also includes pirate currency (‘Spanish Reales’ and ‘Pieces of Eight’). You will need to print a currency page for each player, and one for the bank!. It is a problem as there would have been ample space on one page to print coins for 3 players (with 4 players you will need to print 17 full-color pages – and there is no black & white version of the game).

Fraction Fury! – Negative Number Edition (Middle School Math Man)

★★★☆☆

Fraction Fury is a board game that reinforces addition and subtraction of negative and positive fractions.

Players: 2-4 | CCSS Grades: 6-8 | For teachers

Most children already have a love-hate relationship with fractions. Add negative numbers to the mix and their heads start spinning! The questions start coming. How can a part of a whole be negative? Why is this important? Some of them may only begin to see the relevance when they learn to convert fractions to decimals and percentages.

This Fraction FuryOpens in a new tab. game is a great way to reinforce addition and subtraction of negative and positive fractions. It has the same rules and fun elements as the Fraction Fury game previously mentioned with one exception – children now have to work with negative numbers.

Unfortunately, the game doesn’t come with an answer key. The teacher has to carefully monitor students’ answer sheets to ensure that they’re on the right track. It’s difficult to remediate mistakes after the game has ended.
