8 Rhyme Bingo Games for Schools and Families

8 Rhyme Bingo Games for Schools and Families

Rhyme Bingo Games are a great school activity to practice phonics, as children love rhyming – especially because it relates to songs and poems.

Rhyming bingo games can be used by families and are really great for schools. They are fun for large groups. Who wins depends on luck, not ability, which avoids competitive pressure. I found 8 rhyme bingo games for schools and families, summarized in the following table:

Rhyming Bingo (Junior Learning)

★★★★★

Rhyming Bingo (Junior Learning), a matching game to teach rhyming words

For Families & Schools | Players: 2-4 | Age: 4-7

Rhyming BingoOpens in a new tab. by Junior Learning contains

  • 4 boards containing 6 squares with a written word (with the end in red) and its illustration
  • 24 cards of the same size as the board’s squares, each with a word that rhymes with one (and only one) of the board’s squares (so that there are in total 48 words in the game and 24 endings)

I highly recommend Rhyming Bingo for families because of it simplicity, or at school for groups of 4 children because the matching mechanism used enables at each draw of a card to have one of the players to get a match (this enables the players to help each other if no match is found, which is great). Another interesting point is that it can be used by children to some extent autonomously (by drawing cards and doing the matches themselves).

Rhyming Bingo (Trend)

★★★☆☆

Rhyming Bingo (Trend), a fun game to teach 28 pairs of rhyming words

3-36 players | Age 4-7 | For Schools

Rhyming BingoOpens in a new tab. by Trend contains:

  • For the caller: 36 cards with a word written on it (not illustrated), and a mat to check which matches exist on the grids
  • For the players: bingo chips and 36 2×4 grids with words and images.

The caller reads a card and puts it on the calling mat. Players search their grid for a rhyming word and place a chip on it if they can find one.

Trend suggests 6 variations by limiting the squares on the grids that are used (they enable to adapt the difficulty of the rhymes).

I find the game very confusing for young students. There is often (because of the limited number of squares used and if there are not many children playing) no word that rhymes, and often there is one word PLUS the same word as the card on the grid.

This is a real drawback. If you want to avoid this problem, you will have to prepare in advance the set of cards and grids that you use to ensure especially that the card’s words do not appear on the grids you are going to use.

So I recommend this game but only to teachers with a large number of students.

Wipe-Off Bingo (Trend) – Rhyming/Sight Words/Consonants

★★★★★

Wipe-Off Bingo (Trend), a bingo game to learn initial consonant sounds, 36 sight words, and 15 rhyming word pairs

For Parents | Age 4-8 | 3-8 players

Wipe-Off BingoOpens in a new tab. includes 3 bingos, each with 8 two-sided player’s 2×4 grids and a Caller’s mat (there are no tokens for players, as they write on the wipe-off grids with a marker):

  • A rhyming bingo (16 sounds / 32 words in caller’s mat, unfortunately repeated in player’s grids like for Trend’s Rhyming Bingo)
  • A sight words bingo (42 sight words in total)
  • An initial consonant bingo (20 consonants)

(Like Rhyming Bingo by Trend, selecting the zones in the grids that can be used enables 6 variations)

I highly recommend wipe-off Bingo for families as it is a great value for its price with its three in one concept, but you have to be aware though that the “Rhyming” part suffers from the same problems as Trend’s Rhyming Bingo described above.

Rhyming Bingo (Lakeshore)

★★★★★

Rhyming Bingo (Lakeshore), a super fun game to engage kids with rhyming sounds

Age 4-6 | Up to 36 players | For Schools and Families

Rhyming BingoOpens in a new tab. by Lakeshore includes 36 game cards, bingo markers, rhyming calling cards, calling card mat and an activity guide.

The game is suitable for both small and large groups. It is very helpful in learning rhyming words. It doesn’t need much time to be organized.

I highly recommend Rhyming Bingo by Lakeshore because every calling card has not only the picture of the word to be called for, but also the rhyming words other players should be figuring out (and the player’s grids have both images and words). It is very easy to manage and organize.

Rhyming Bingo (Smart Kids)

★★★★☆

Rhyming Bingo (Smart Kids), a fun matching bingo game to learn rhyming words

Players: 1-4 players | Age 5+ | For Parents and teachers

In Rhyming Bingo by Smart KidsOpens in a new tab., children match 24 cards that rhyme with words on one of the 4 game board. Each card has a word on one side and its picture on the other.

With the same number of boards and cards I would rather recommend Rhyming Bingo by Junior Learning because it is much cheaper, but Smart Kids’ game is a good game though.

Auditory Adventures (Super Duper Publications) – Bingo & Lotto Listening Games

★★★★☆

Auditory Adventures (Super Duper Publications) is an amazing and a comprehensive auditory games to learn rhymes

For Teachers | Age 4-8 | 1-6 players

Auditory AdventuresOpens in a new tab. includes 18 different auditory skills related games, including “Listening Lotto” and “Auditory Bingo” that can be used with rhymes.

The 108-page lesson activity book, reproducible homework sheets, 200 tokens and packs of crayons are designed to facilitate the use in the classroom and give the teacher opportunities to extend the use of the game at home.

I recommend Auditory Adventures for teachers as it is so versatile and comprehensive.

Rhyming Words J-I-N-G-O (Gary Grimm and associates)

★★★★☆

Rhyming Words J-I-N-G-O, a bigo game to learn basic vocabulary and develop spelling

For Teachers and parents | 2-30 players | Age 4-7

Rhyming Words J-I-N-G-OOpens in a new tab. contains: 30 player cards, clue cards, directions for play, ideas and extensions. It is played like bingo, except that players have to answer questions that contain rhymes to find which square to cover in their grid, for example (answer: ROSE):

  1. This word rhymes with HOSE
  2. This word rhymes with NOSE
  3. This word completes the following rhyme: My favorite flower to smell with my nose is a beautiful red….

I recommend Rhyming Words J-I-N-G-O because it is practical for both small and large groups, has an original mechanism that departs from other existing rhyme bingos and incorporates rhyming into meaningful sentences.

Rhyming Words Bingo (Fun Express)

★★★☆☆

Rhyming Words Bingo (Fun Express), a bingo game to master phonemic awareness

For Teachers | 2-30 players | Age 3-7

Rhyming Words BingoOpens in a new tab. includes 35 word cards for the caller, 30 grid cards for the players and 594 small colored paper chips. The calling words are all different from the pictures on the game cards. The teacher calls out a word from call-out cards and students cover the pictures that rhyme with the called out phrase with a paper chip until they form a BINGO!

I would rather recommend Rhyming Bingo by Lakeshore than Rhyming words bingo by Fun Express because the grid cards contain only images (not words), which sometimes creates confusion as to which word is represented on the image.

Other Types of Games

If you are interested in more rhyme games, you might want to check my post “13 Rhyme Card, Puzzle & Domino Games for Primary & Preschool Children”

You may want to start with rhyme card games as they are the simplest form of rhyme games. Puzzles are useful learning tools as well as they are self-correcting. You can also use them to enhance little children’s motor skills and increase their ability to concentrate or domino games. Rhyming dominos are great for children who enjoy their manipulation.

A cheaper option that requires more time for activity preparation is printable rhyme games. If you are interested by them then you need to read my upcoming post “Printable Rhyme Games”.

If you notice that your child likes dice games I advise you to take a look at my post “6 Rhyme Dice & RodsOpens in a new tab. Opens in a new tab.Games for Preschoolers and Primary SchoolOpens in a new tab.“.

I have been creating educational games since 2001, and I transformed this passion into my professional activity when I created ARITMA in 2006. Aritma is a publisher of educational card games, which currently proposes 18 different games, and increases its collection each year. I am always curious about new learning games, wherever they come from and their form.
